Chapel Hill is 9-1 against Riverside-Durham since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. After both having extra time off, the two teams will shake off the rust and duke it out at 7:00 p.m.
Things were looking good for Chapel Hill after they put the first runs on the board two weeks ago, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell 10-7 to Jordan. The Tigers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Jason Krieg made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored a run while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, Riverside-Durham strolled into their game two weeks ago with a perfect record and they left with the same. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Hillside a 10-0 shutout. Give the Pirates' pitching crew some credit: that's the team's third straight shutout.
Brayden Mottola was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out six over five innings pitched. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one home run, one stolen base, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Lucas Setji was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. That home run was his first of the season. Jesse May was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one home run, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Riverside-Durham always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .533. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hillside only posted an OBP of .125.
Chapel Hill's loss dropped their record down to 6-5. As for Riverside-Durham, their victory was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 10-0.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Chapel Hill has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 10.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Riverside-Durham struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Chapel Hill was able to grind out a solid win over Riverside-Durham in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, winning 15-11. Do the Tigers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Pirates turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
