Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Manual). Everything went their way against the Denver West Cowboys on Saturday as they made off with a 23-3 victory. The result was nothing new for the Thunderbolts, who have now won seven matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
Alan Whatley made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out nine batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off four hits (and only one walk). Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Manual is undefeated when Whatley posts two or more runs, but 5-6 otherwise.
In other batting news, Manual let Jake Carney and Jesus Marquez run wild. Carney went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, four runs, and three RBI, while Marquez went a perfect 3-for-3 with four stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. Those four stolen bases gave Marquez a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Andrew Hernandez, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run.
Manual kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.4 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 contests they've averaged 9.4.
Manual's win bumped their record up to 8-6. As for Denver West, their loss was their 21st straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 0-15.
