TAPPS Division II District 4 recap Nov. 7, 2012
Northland Christian extended the longest winning streak in TAPPS Division II District 4 this week by beating Pope John XXIII, 49-13. This was the team's eighth consecutive win.
Lutheran South took down Lutheran North 43-6 last week, the largest margin of any game.
Walker Whitehorn and Carter Odenweller gave Northland Christian a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Whitehorn threw for 125 yards and two touchdowns, while Odenweller ran for 115 yards. Teammate Darien Simms added to the ground attack by rushing for 54 yards.
Brandon Slater was the best wideout in the league this week as the Lions fell to the Pioneers. Slater racked up eight receptions for 96 yards. DeeJay Johnson helped Lutheran North's passing attack out by catching five balls for 30 yards.
Nelson Gunnell provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Lutheran North lost to Lutheran South. He completed 19 passes for 185 yards and one touchdown and also ran for 110 yards.
Thump Phillips' team's Gunnell and Slater have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Gunnell has thrown for 1795 yards this season, while Slater, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has 47 catches for 740 yards. Odenweller from David Nelson's team leads the league in rushing with 1084 yards.
The top two teams in TAPPS Division II District 4 will face off this week when first place Northland Christian takes on second place Second Baptist. Last week, the Cougars bested the Lions, while Second Baptist defeated Westbury Christian.
Stephen Robbins' team made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 9,178 from 9,558. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 43-6 victory over the Lions last week.
