Jabril Trawick wanted to make it official—and on Friday, he did. The 6-6, 200-pound senior guard from
Abington Friends School (Jenkintown, Pa.), by way of West Philadelphia, signed a national letter of intent Wendesday to Georgetown and coach John Thompson and spoke for the first time publicly Friday about officially becoming a Hoya.
Trawick chose Georgetown over Florida State, Virginia Tech, Xavier and Boston College, after averaging 16.8 points and 5.5 rebounds for the Kangaroos last in his junior year last season.
"You think Georgetown, you think Big East and you think big time," Trawick said. "You look at Goergetown, and also have to consider the history there, with Allen Iverson, my favorite player, who went there, and Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Mourning, and you can go on and on.
"The other factor in my choice is the Georgetown is a great academic school. I know I'm getting a good education there at Georgetown and know I'll have a life beyond basketball. It's one of the most prestigious academic schools in the country. Coach Thompson is a great coach and they have a great staff there."
Trawick now joins a growing list of Philadelphia-area high school stars that have committed to Big East Conference schools.
That list includes Pittsburgh-bound
John Johnson (Life Center Academy 6-foot-1 point guard),
Jaylen Bond (Plymouth-Whitemarsh 6-7 forward) and
Malcolm Gilbert (Academy of the New Church 7-0 center), Syracuse verbal
Rakeem Christmas (ANC 6-9 power forward) and West Virginia is getting
Aaron Brown (Penn Wood 6-5 guard).
Florida State was high on Trawick's list, and Georgetown actually came into the picture late. But Trawick is pleased Thompson did.
"I'm really happy to get this over with," Trawick said. "The process was starting to get a little fustratuing. I can enjoy my senior year, and I was getting six, seven phone calls a day and that was making everything harder. Now that I know where I'm going, I can just play."
Trawick, who's grown four inches over the last two years, could project to play a variety of positions for the Hoyas, from the point to small or power forward.
"Playing in the Big East and the TV exposure it brings wasn't the top reason I chose Georgetown, I was looking at what fit me and my game best," Trawick said. "Georgetown provides everything, a fit for my game, the academics, the history. It really is a perfect fit."
