The Elizabeth Cardinals's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their sixth straight defeat. They took a 61-52 hit to the loss column at the hands of The Classical Academy. Elizabeth has struggled against the Titans recently, as their contest on Friday was their sixth consecutive lost matchup.
Several Cardinals players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Cooper Connelley, who scored 13 points along with four steals. Connelley has been hot recently, having posted three or more steals the last three times he's played. Caleb Dunn was another key contributor, scoring 15 points.
Even though they lost, Elizabeth were working as a unit and finished the game with 17 assists. This was only their 12th loss (out of 15 games) when they've passed the ball that well.
Jordan Wenger continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for The Classical Academy, shooting 5-for-8 from downtown and dropping a double-double on 35 points and ten rebounds. That makes it three consecutive games in which Wenger has scored at least a third of The Classical Academy's points. Another player making a difference was Carter Miller, who scored 11 points.
Elizabeth dropped their record down to 3-16 with that defeat, which was their third straight at home. That rough patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 55.0 points per game. As for The Classical Academy, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 9-7.
Elizabeth will head out on the road to take on the Marauders at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Mitchell comes in still looking for their first win of the season. As for The Classical Academy, they won't have much time to rest: their next game is against the Gladiators at 1:00 p.m. on February 3rd. Widefield will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Colorado Rankings (they are ranked 261st, while the Titans are ranked 124th).
