Laton and Orange Cove played the most contested game in East Sierra this week, with Laton eventually emerging with a 20-14 victory. Manuel Cruz threw for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for 58 yards in the win.
The Mustangs made the biggest leap in the national rankings this week, rising to 13,626 from 13,874. The improvement was largely due to a 20-14 victory over the Titans last week.
Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, Farmersville's Sam Metcalf and Joseph DeLaCruz have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-0 quarterback Metcalf has thrown for 3,021 yards this season, while DeLaCruz has 57 catches for 1,019 yards. Cruz from Laton leads the league in rushing with 913 yards.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Farmersville takes on second place Laton.
The Aztecs' offense has scored 408 points this season, good for No. 1 in the league, while Ryan Lewis' team has allowed only 280 on the year.
The Mustangs' Elijah Jimenez needs only 86 receiving yards against Farmersville to crack 1,000 for the season. So far this year, he has garnered 44 catches for 914 yards.
Cruz of the Laton is just 87 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. Cruz has rushed for 913 yards on 142 carries so far this year.
