Washington is 0-5 against Gibson Southern since October of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Washington Hatchets will be playing in front of their home fans against the Gibson Southern Titans at 7:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
After low-scoring totals in their previous three contests, Washington brought some dynamite into their most recent contest. They took their game at home on Friday with ease, bagging a 46-7 victory over West Vigo. The win was just what Washington needed coming off of a 50-7 defeat in their prior contest.
Washington can attribute much of their success to Colton Stowers, who threw for 193 yards and three touchdowns on only 17 passes. The team also got some help courtesy of Brody Isza, who picked up 71 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Gibson Southern had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 27 points), and they went ahead and made it six on Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Mt. Vernon 40-7 at home. Given Gibson Southern's advantage in MaxPreps' Indiana football rankings (they are ranked 32nd, while Mt. Vernon is ranked 152nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Gibson Southern's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Sean DeLong led the charge by rushing for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Tanner Boyd was another key contributor, throwing for 196 yards and two touchdowns.
Washington's victory bumped their record up to 3-7. As for Gibson Southern, their win was their sixth straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 8-2.
Washington was taken down by Gibson Southern 45-6 when the teams last played back in September. Can Washington avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
