The Ephrata Mountaineers will head out to square off against the Manheim Township Blue Streaks at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Ephrata is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.2 runs per game this season.
Ephrata will roll into the game after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up two runs on Wednesday, then bounced right back against J.P. McCaskey on Monday. The Mountaineers' pitchers stepped up to hand the Red Tornado a 13-0 shutout. The victory continues a trend for the Mountaineers in their matchups with the Red Tornado: they've now won three in a row.
Landry Weidner and Nathan Savage made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Weidner tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Savage didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. Weidner has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up a single walk in three consecutive appearances. At bat, Weidner got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Savage went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most runs Weidner has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Ephrata let JD Muhr and Ethan Hunt run wild. Muhr got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs, while Hunt got on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. Hunt is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Ty Custer, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base.
Ephrata always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .710. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Manheim Township came tearing into Tuesday's matchup with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against the Colts by a score of 6-3.
Nolan Peters tossed a big game, pitching 6.1 innings while giving up three earned runs off seven hits.
At the plate, Manheim Township's win was truly a team effort as six different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Dionisio Acosta, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Manheim Township pushed their record up to 10-4 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Ephrata, their record now sits at 9-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Ephrata has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Manheim Township struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Ephrata was able to grind out a solid victory over Manheim Township when the teams last played on April 7th, winning 4-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mountaineers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
