The Sutherland Sailors were the 36-35 winner over the Maxwell Wildcats when they last played one another back in February of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. Sutherland took a 49-41 hit to the loss column at the hands of Maxwell on Tuesday. Sutherland has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Sutherland lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Story Rasby, who scored 13 points along with eight rebounds and four steals. Rasby hasn't dropped below three steals for three straight games. Another player making a difference was Glory Naughtin, who scored seven points along with ten rebounds and six steals.
Maxwell found their leader in underclassman Kristyn Cheek, who scored 27 points along with seven rebounds and seven steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Cheek has scored all season. Jenna Miller was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with five assists and three steals.
Sutherland's loss dropped their record down to 4-14. As for Maxwell, their win bumped their record up to 7-12.
Sutherland will head out on the road to take on Paxton at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Paxtonpresents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Sutherland in Nebraska (Paxton is ranked 127th, while Sutherland is ranked 257th). As for Maxwell, they will head out on the road to take on Medicine Valley at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Medicine Valley focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 18 last Friday.
