The University Bulldogs's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their third straight defeat. They lost to Berthoud on the road by a decisive 74-58 margin. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Despite the loss, University had strong showings from Coehn Nitzel, who scored 27 points along with five rebounds and two steals, and John Elbe, who scored 15 points along with eight rebounds and two blocks. It was the first time this season that Elbe pulled down eight or more rebounds. Another player making a difference was Gage Schminke, who scored nine points along with seven rebounds and three steals.
Isaac Erickson was his usual excellent self, scoring 15 points along with three blocks and two steals for Berthoud. Erickson is on a roll when it comes to blocks, as he's now posted two or more in the last four games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Reece Stratmeyer, who almost dropped a double-double on 11 points and nine rebounds.
University dropped their record down to 5-14 with that loss, which was their fourth straight on the road. As for Berthoud, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 12-7.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. University will challenge Valley at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully University focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 15 on Tuesday. As for Berthoud, they will head out on the road to take on Resurrection Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
