The Evans Knights will head out on the road to face off against the South Effingham Mustangs at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Evans is coming into the match on a three-game losing streak.
Last Friday, Evans took a serious blow against Brunswick, falling 35-7. While losing is never fun, Evans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia football rankings (they are ranked 234th, while Brunswick is ranked 69th).
Meanwhile, South Effingham put the finishing touches on their third blowout victory of the season on Friday. They were the clear victor by a 40-14 margin over Grovetown. The victory was just what South Effingham needed coming off of a 38-14 defeat in their prior matchup.
Among those leading the charge was DeGenero Kaden, who threw for 145 yards and two touchdowns on only eight passes, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Aubrey Heath did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 80 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Brunswick's win bumped their season record to 6-2 while Evans' loss dropped theirs to 3-6.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Evans has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 189.2 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like South Effingham struggles in that department as they've been even better at 221.1 per game. It's looking like Friday's match might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Evans was able to grind out a solid win over South Effingham when the teams last played back in November of 2022, winning 37-24. The rematch might be a little tougher for Evans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
