Softball Recap: Mount Vernon Triumphs

While Mount Vernon's victory against Commerce wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. Mount Vernon sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 win over Commerce on Tuesday. The victory continues a trend for Mount Vernon in their matchups with Commerce: they've now won nine in a row.

Amber Alford and Grayson Hammonds were major factors no matter where they played. On the mound, Alford pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off four hits. Meanwhile, Hammonds pitched four innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits. Alford has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one walk in six consecutive appearances. At bat, Alford went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI, while Hammonds went 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI. That's the most hits Alford has posted over her last seven contests.

In other batting news, Jaida Doss was excellent, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Those two runs gave her a new career-high. Brihana Walker also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Mount Vernon was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .433. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Commerce only posted a batting average of .226.

Mount Vernon's win bumped their record up to 11-6-1. As for Commerce, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-9-1 record this season.

Mount Vernon will be playing at home against Chisum at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Commerce, they will head out on the road to challenge Rains at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Wildcats will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each game than the last.
