Baseball Game Preview: Southern Trojans vs. Atherton Ravens

Southern is a perfect 3-0 against Atherton since April of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Trojans will host the Ravens at 7:30 p.m. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Southern's pitching crew heads into the contest hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Tuesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 2-0 victory over Bullitt Central. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Not much got past Richard Hernandez, who gave up just three hits and racked up 12 Ks to keep Bullitt Central off the board. Hernandez has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up a single earned run in four consecutive appearances.

Meanwhile, Atherton hadn't done well against Fern Creek recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Ravens walked away with a 9-6 win over the Tigers. The game was the first time the Ravens have beaten the Tigers on their field since April 1, 2015.

The team relied heavily on Jude Fulks, who scored two runs while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Atherton is undefeated when Fulks posts two or more runs, but 2-4-1 otherwise. Kenneth Whobrey was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Southern is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine games. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-7 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.9 runs on average over those games. As for Atherton, they now have a winning record of 5-4-1.

Everything went Southern's way against Atherton in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, as Southern made off with an 11-1 win. Do the Trojans have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Ravens turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
