5A Region II District 15 recap November 5, 2013
Austin was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to fourth in 5A Region II District 15. The Maroons beat Del Valle 20-14 earlier in the week.
Anderson scaled the state rankings by moving to 715 from 792 this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Trojans were able to move up by losing to Bowie 35-14.
Lake Travis's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Dominic De Lira threw for 98 and 2 touchdowns and Tyler Payne had 30 yards receiving. On the ground Varshaun Nixon chipped in 131 yards. Nixon helped Lake Travis' passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 30 yards.
Nixon provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Cavaliers defeated Westlake. Nixon's key target this week was Payne, who caught 3 passes for 30 yards.
Nixon was the best running back in the league this week. In 25 carries, he ran for 131 yards as Lake Travis bested the Chaparrals.
Hank Carter's team's De Lira and Payne led 5A Region II District 15 in both passing and receiving yards. De Lira has thrown for 1,522 yards this season, while Payne has 31 catches for 519 yards. Akins's Teddy Lowery leads the league in rushing yards with 1,044.
In 133 carries Nixon has put up 929 yards this year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Westlake takes on Austin. At the moment, Daren Allman's team is in third, while Mike Rosenthal's team is in fourth.
The Cavaliers extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating the Chaparrals, 28-27. The win marks eighth in a row for the Lake Travis.
