St. Mary is 0-7 against Mesquite since November of 2014 but things could change on Wednesday. The St. Mary's Knights will host the Mesquite Wildcats at 5:30 p.m.
St. Mary's came up short against Mingus on Monday, falling 59-35.
Loss or not, St. Mary's got some senior leadership from Gwen Carter and Ava Sierras. Carter posted 23 points, while Sierras put up ten points along with eight rebounds and three steals. That was a full 65.7% of St. Mary's points, marking the ninth time in a row she's had more than a third of the team's points.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Mesquite). They breezed by Marcos de Niza to the tune of 116-7 on Friday. The Wildcats have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 12 games by 24 points or more this season.
St. Mary's better keep an eye on Navae Guidry. She was instrumental in Mesquite's win, going 14 of 19 on her way to 30 points in addition to eight steals and six boards. Guidry's evening made it three games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Lucy Fisher, who went 9 of 12 on her way to 18 points along with six assists and six boards.
Mesquite smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've posted since back in February of 2024.
Mesquite's victory was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 15-1. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 71.6 points per game. As for St. Mary's, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-6.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: St. Mary's has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 22.3 boards per game. However, it's not like Mesquite struggles in that department as they've been averaging 34.9 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
St. Mary's might still be hurting after the 64-42 loss they got from Mesquite when the teams last played back in January of 2024. Can St. Mary's avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
