Gillespie is a perfect 8-0 against Greenville since April of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Miners will be playing at home against the Comets at 4:30 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Greenville will take on a team with plenty of momentum: Gillespie extended their winning streak to five on Thursday. Everything went the Miners' way against O'Fallon as they made off with a 12-2 win.
Paxton Reid was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, Gillespie got a massive performance out of Laci Schuckenbrock, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. That triple marked the first that Schuckenbrock has hit this season. Another player making a difference was Ava Parish, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Greenville never got on the board in their matchup on Monday, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against Vandalia on Tuesday. They put the hurt on the Vandals with a sharp 17-3 victory. The Comets have beaten the Vandals the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Vandals has come to flipping the script.
Like Gillespie, Greenville also got a great game from a two-way player: Payton White. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits. White was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two runs.
In other batting news, Haylee Clark was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. Ramzi Stefanisin was another key player, going 2-for-4 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run.
Gillespie pushed their record up to 11-5 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for Greenville, their win bumped their record up to 14-3-1.
Friday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Gillespie hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .362. However, it's not like Greenville struggles in that department as they've averaged .349. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Gillespie took their victory against Greenville in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 7-1 score. Do the Miners have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Comets turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
