The Willcox Cowboys's three-game losing streak came to an end on Monday. They claimed a resounding 68-39 victory over Patagonia at home. The victory was just what Willcox needed coming off of a 65-31 loss in their prior game.
Lane Whetten was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 24 points and 16 rebounds. That makes it two consecutive games in which he has scored at least 25% of Willcox's points. Another player making a difference was Caden Hooper, who scored 12 points.
Patagonia's loss came despite strong showings from Diego Carranza and Gus Varela. Carranza scored 11 points along with 5 rebounds and 4 steals, while Varela scored 14 points. Carranza has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times he's played. Arturo Magallanes was another key contributor, scoring 8 points along with 5 steals.
Even though they lost, Patagonia were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Willcox only pulled down 24.
Willcox's win bumped their record up to 3-4. As for Patagonia, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-9.
Willcox will head out on the road to face off against Morenci at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. One thing working in Morenci's favor is that they have posted big point totals every time they've taken the court this season. As for Patagonia, they will look to defend their home court on Wednesday against Desert Christian at 7:00 p.m. Desert Christian has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
