Monticello has gone 9-1 against St. Thomas More recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Sages will head out on the road to face off against the Sabers at 4:30 p.m. Monticello is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.6 runs per game this season.
Monticello took a loss when they played away from home on Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Thursday. They blew past Paxton-Buckley-Loda 8-0. The win continues a trend for the Sages in their matchups with the Panthers: they've now won three in a row.
Not much got past Madison Highland, who gave up just two hits to keep Paxton-Buckley-Loda off the board. Highland has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Lucy Leatherwood was excellent, going 1-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. That double was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Sadie Walsh, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, St. Thomas More was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their ninth straight defeat. They came up short against Iroquois West, falling 17-5.
Ella Atwood made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-2 with three stolen bases, three RBI, and one run. Kaitlynn Ballard was another key player, going 1-for-3 with three stolen bases and two runs.
Monticello's victory was their 15th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 15-4. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.1 runs on average over those games. As for St. Thomas More, their loss dropped their record down to 0-9.
St. Thomas More's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Monticello hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .371. It's a different story for St. Thomas More, though, as they've only averaged .163. Will they be able to contain Monticello's hitters?
Monticello took their victory against St. Thomas More when the teams last played back in April of 2023 by a conclusive 27-0 score. Will the Sages repeat their success, or do the Sabers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
