The Ann Sobrato Bulldogs are taking a road trip to square off against the Gilroy Mustangs at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Ann Sobrato is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10 runs per game this season.
Ann Sobrato came into this matchup off a tough eight-run loss on Wednesday. This time they kept things ultra-competitive, but unfortunately the final result was the same. They fell just short of Leland by a score of 6-4 on Thursday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Bulldogs have suffered since March 5, 2024.
Amber Rodriguez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and four unearned) runs on ten hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Jordan Bouton made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run while going 2-for-3. Julia Carlsen was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Gilroy had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it five on Tuesday. They put the hurt on the Chargers with a sharp 18-2 victory. The Mustangs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five matchups by eight runs or more this season.
Stella Rhodas made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching five innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. Rhodas was also big at the plate, scoring three runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Dani Wilson and Ariela Yslava did most of the damage at the plate: Wilson fired off two home runs, five runs, and five RBI while going 4-for-4, while Yslava went 3-for-5 with one home run, six RBI, and one double. That's the most hits Wilson has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Christy Haro, who scored a run while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances.
Gilroy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .643. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Gilroy's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 7-3. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.7 runs on average over those games. As for Ann Sobrato, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-2.
Thursday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Ann Sobrato hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .395. However, it's not like Gilroy struggles in that department as they've averaged .323. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Ann Sobrato might still be hurting after the 12-0 loss they got from Gilroy in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can Ann Sobrato avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
