The Amphitheater Panthers were the 54-51 winner over the Canyon del Oro Dorados when they last played one another back in November of 2022, but their luck changed this time around. Amphitheater took a 62-50 hit to the loss column at the hands of Canyon del Oro on Tuesday. While losing is never fun, Amphitheater can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 129th, while Canyon del Oro is ranked 40th).
Amphitheater's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Matthew Vital, who scored 12 points, and Aeden Haymore who scored 10 points. Haymore is absolutely dominating the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season.
Even though they lost, Amphitheater were working as a unit and finished the game with 13 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Canyon del Oro only racked up three.
Canyon del Oro's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Tyler Skorupa led the charge by scoring 26 points. Will Dixion was another key contributor, scoring 18 points along with 5 blocks.
Amphitheater has fallen quite a ways from their 17-7 record last season and are now at 1-2. As for Canyon del Oro, the win for they keeps them at an undefeated 7-0.
Amphitheater will look to defend their home court on Thursday against Flowing Wells at 7:00 p.m. Flowing Wells is coming into the match on a four-game losing streak. As for Canyon del Oro, they will head out on the road to face off against Mica Mountain at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Mica Mountain has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 335 points over their last five matchups.
