The Avalon Eagles fought the good fight in their overtime match against the Oakwood Panthers on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell to the Panthers 36-32. Avalon was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Oakwood apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2023.
Despite the defeat, Avalon saw an underclassman step up: Brooklyn De La Garza scored 13 points. That was a full 40.6% of Avalon's points, marking the eighth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Leading Oakwood to victory were Jacee Youngblood and Rai'Miaya Winston. Youngblood dropped a double-double on 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Winston scored 19 points. Youngblood hasn't dropped below two steals for three straight games.
Avalon's defeat dropped their record down to 13-7. As for Oakwood, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 11-6.
Avalon will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Bynum at 6:00 p.m. Bynum is no doubt hoping to put an end to a six-game streak of away losses. As for Oakwood, they will head out on the road to take on Coolidge at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
