Baseball Recap: Clay Triumphs

The Clay Eagles were able to grind out a solid win over the Columbian Tornadoes on Monday, taking the game 4-1.

Darin Fussell made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Clay is undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 8-9 otherwise. Fussell was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run. Those two doubles gave him a new career-high.

Fussell wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Brannan Vargas, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Clay has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-9 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Columbian, they dropped their record down to 8-13 with the defeat, which was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Clay will host Oak Harbor at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Rockets will roll in looking for their seventh straight win, something the Eagles surely won't give up without a fight. As for Columbian, they will be taking part in a tournament against Madison Comprehensive at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Tornadoes are facing the Rams at the right time seeing as the Rams are stuck on a nine-game losing streak.
