The Canon City Tigers will head out on the road to face off against the Rampart Rams at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Canon City's pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so Rampart's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
It was a proper cat-fight when Canon City faced off against Coronado on Friday. The Tigers' pitchers stepped up to hand the Cougars a 16-0 shutout. Considering the Tigers have won eight contests by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Rocco Montoya tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run while striking out six over five innings pitched.
On the hitting side, Canon City got a massive performance out of Zeke Martinez, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs, two RBI, and one double. Those two runs gave Martinez a new career-high. Trey Schumaker was another key player, going 2-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run.
Canon City kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Rampart earned a 9-5 victory over Vista Ridge on Thursday.
The team relied heavily on Duke Pingrey, who went 3-for-4 with three doubles, two runs, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Brayden Valdez, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Canon City has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-8 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.2 runs over those games. As for Rampart, their victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-14.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Canon City has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Rampart struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
