On Friday, the Sugar-Salem Diggers faced the South Fremont Cougars in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Sugar-Salem fell just short of South Fremont by a score of 49-46. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat Sugar-Salem has suffered yet this season.
When it comes to explaining why Sugar-Salem lost, one person who can't be blamed is Ashlyn Harris. Despite the final result, she scored 15 points along with seven rebounds and two blocks. That's the first time this season that Harris scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Andee Petterson, who scored 12 points along with seven assists and two steals.
Brianne Bailey continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for South Fremont, dropping a double-double on 19 points and ten steals. Bailey is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Lily Christensen, who scored ten points along with five assists.
Sugar-Salem are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 10-6. As for South Fremont, the victory (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 13-2.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sugar-Salem will take on Ririe at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. South Fremont won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Snake River at 7:30 p.m. on January 13th. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Idaho (Snake River is ranked 16th, while South Fremont is ranked 17th).
