AISA AAA Region 1 recap October 22, 2013
Bessemer Academy added to the longest winning streak in AISA AAA Region 1 this week by beating Fort Dale Academy, 34-21. The victory was the fourth in a row for the team.
Ward Military Academy lost to Lee-Scott Academy 60-6 last week, the largest margin of any game.
Gavin Sumrall threw for 170 yards and 4 touchdowns. He went 5-8 with 0 interceptions.
Thomas DeGrange made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Warriors defeated the Fighting Rangers. He grabbed 1 interception.
Sumrall put up the best numbers in passing as Kingwood Christian beat Macon-East Montgomery Academy. Sumrall's favorite target this week was C'Yontai Lewis, who caught 2 passes for 87 yards.
The Lions' Sumrall and Montez Haynes led the league in both passing and receiving yards. Sumrall has thrown for 2,097 yards this season, while Haynes has 38 catches for 926 yards. DeGrange from Lee-Scott Academy leads the league in rushing with 962 yards.
Kingwood Christian's Haynes needs only 74 receiving yards against Tuscaloosa Academy to crack 1,000 for the season. So far this year, he has garnered 38 catches for 926 yards.
DeGrange of the Robert Maddox's team is only 38 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. DeGrange has rushed for 962 yards on 95 carries so far this year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Steve Birmingham's team takes on the Knights. As it stands, the Lions are in first, while Tuscaloosa Academy is in third.
The Warriors led AISA AAA Region 1 in scoring this week by notching 60 points on Ward Military Academy. Tanner Blatt ran for 128 yards in the win.
