The Newport Cubs''s recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fourth straight loss. They had to suffer through a rough 44-0 loss at the hands of Taft. Newport was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Taft apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2021.
Armando Fajardo continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Taft, rushing for 74 yards and three touchdowns on only five carries, while also throwing for 226 yards and two touchdowns. Evan Halferty was in the mix as well, providing Taft with two touchdowns.
Newport's loss was their sixth straight on the road (dating back to last season), which dropped their overall record down to 1-7. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 8-0 Dayton and 9-2 Santiam Christian (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 60.4% over those games). As for Taft, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-4.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Newport will take on Salem Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Salem Academy is coming into the match hot, having won their last three games. As for Taft, they will head out on the road to face off against Santiam Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
