Basketball Recap: Southern Wells Takes a Loss

Southern Wells was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their tenth straight defeat dating back to last season. They were one points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 45-44 heartbreaker at the hands of the Union City Indians. The Raiders lost against the Indians in their previous head to head back in December of 2023, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 64-39 score last time.

Southern Wells' loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cj Reber, who went 8 for 17 on his way to 20 points and six rebounds. The dominant performance gave Reber a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Landon Johnson, who posted 13 points.

Union City was led to victory by Trendon Spence and Jackson Cowper. Spence had 15 points in addition to five rebounds and four steals, while Cowper went 7 of 11 on his way to 16 points along with six boards and three steals. Spence continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Caleb Lutz was another key player, putting up three points.

Southern Wells' defeat dropped their record down to 0-7. As for Union City, their win ended a four-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-5.

Southern Wells will challenge Heritage at 7:30 p.m. on January 11th. Heritage is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 57.3 points per game this season. As for Union City, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 68-34 loss against Winchester Community on the 8th.
