Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2023 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
B.J. Alleyne of
Salesianum (Wilmington) is the 2023 MaxPreps Delaware High School Football Player of the Year. The 5-foot-9, 190-pound senior running back led the Sallies to a 12-1 record and Class 3A state title.
For the season, Alleyne rushed for over 1,700 yards and 29 touchdowns en route to earning Class 3A Offensive Player of the Year honors.
In a 45-17 win over Cape Henlopen (Lewes) in the championship game, Alleyne carried 20 times for 192 yards and three touchdowns, lifting Salesianum to its first title since 2013. A week prior in the semifinals, he rushed for 126 yards and two scores to go with a 51-yard touchdown pass in a 24-14 win over Middletown.
Alleyne's best performance came in a 41-40 win over defending Class 3A champion Smyrna in the opening round of the playoffs. He had 34 carries for 200 yards and five touchdowns, including the game-winner from two yards out on fourth-and-goal in the final seconds.
