The Crystal City Javelinas came tearing into Friday's matchup with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 19.7 points) and they left with even more momentum. They breezed by Dilley on the road to the tune of 90-56. Given Crystal City's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 683rd, while Dilley is ranked 1505th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Christopher Mena was his usual excellent self, shooting 5-for-12 from long range and almost dropping a double-double on 42 points and nine assists. As a matter of fact, that's the most points he has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Eli Mata, who scored 19 points along with five steals.
Dilley lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Jacob Lopez, who scored 23 points along with five assists and five rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Dorian Aranda, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Crystal City is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten contests, which provided a massive bump to their 21-12 record this season. As for Dilley, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost ten of their last 11 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-20 record this season.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Crystal City will take on Natalia at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Crystal City knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past ten matches -- so hopefully Natalia likes a good challenge. As for Dilley, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Hondo at 7:30 p.m. Hopefully Dilley focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 36 on Friday.
