After a tough loss in their home opener against Archbisop Mitty-San Jose, the Las Lomas Knights looked to rebound with a road win over Marin Catholic.
However, it was not to be.
In their road opener, the Knights defense struggled to stop the run, marring a good offensive performance in a 28-19 loss at the Marin Catholic Wildcats on Saturday..
For the second straight week, the Las Lomas defense had severe problems defending the run, as Wildcats running back Chris Adams ran wild, gaining 283 yards and scoring four touchdowns.
“The offense couldn’t finish drives, and the defense couldn’t stop drives when we needed them to,” said senior quarterback Lucas Gorton.
Offensively, the Knights (0-2) had a much better effort than the previous week. Gorton was 15 for 22 passing, throwing for 200 yards and a lone interception after his atrocious season opener. Leading the Knights receivers was senior Chase Herring, who caught five balls for 72 yards.
“I was able to find the holes better than last week and pick apart the defense,” said Herring. “Lucas was also much better than last week. He was on his game.”
Both of the Knights’ touchdowns came on the ground, one from senior Michael Morgan and the other from junior Marquis Waters, who ran for 125 yards. However, the Knights offensive performance was spoiled by a poor defensive effort. The game magnified many of Las Lomas’s problems, especially defensively.
“We had mostly mental problems,” said Gorton. “We need to focus in at practice and be more vocal on the field.”
The Knights will try to get on the winning side of the score sheet next Saturday, in a matchup with cross-town rival Northgate.
