The Norwell Knights will head out on the road to face off against the Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran Cadets at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Norwell is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.7 runs per game this season.
Norwell took a loss when they played away from home on Monday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Wednesday. They were the clear victors by a 12-4 margin over Bellmont. The victory was some much needed relief for the Knights as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
Kayla Watkins spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Mia Kurtz was incredible, firing off two home runs and five RBI while going 3-for-3. Those two home runs gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kara Brown, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs.
Norwell always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .528. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Bellmont only posted an OBP of .300.
Meanwhile, Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They fell 5-1 to Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger.
Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alexis Spreen, who went 1-for-2 with one RBI.
Norwell's win bumped their record up to 7-4. As for Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-8.
Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Norwell has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.5 hits per game. It's a different story for Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran, though, as they've been averaging 8.7 hits. Given Norwell's sizable advantage in that area, the Cadets will need to find a way to close that gap.
Norwell took their victory against Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 10-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Knights since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
