The Fremont Firebirds are taking a road trip to square off against the Santa Clara Bruins at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Fremont will be strutting in after a win while Santa Clara will be coming in after a loss.
Fremont's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. They were the clear victors by a 17-0 margin over Lynbrook. The Firebirds haven't had any issues with the Vikings recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.
Charlene Hiek was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over 4.2 innings pitched. Hiek was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with four runs and two stolen bases. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Jiyah Caban was incredible, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs and one stolen base. Victoria Ledezma was another key player, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with one RBI.
Meanwhile, after soaring to 19 runs the game before, Santa Clara was a bit more limited in their contest on Friday. They fell 7-2 to Saratoga. The Bruins have struggled against the Falcons recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive lost meeting.
Santa Clara saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jordyn Guzman, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run. Another was Kyla Perkins, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Fremont's record is now 5-10. As for Santa Clara, they now have a losing record of 10-11.
Santa Clara's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Wednesday. Fremont has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.1 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Santa Clara, though, as they've been averaging only 4.1 strikeouts. Will Fremont keep running through batters, or will the Bruins buck the trend?
Fremont suffered a grim 13-3 defeat to Santa Clara in their previous meeting back in April. Can the Firebirds avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
