Gaston Day has enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will square off against the Hickory Grove Christian Lions at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Hickory Grove Christian took a loss in their last contest and will be looking to turn the tables on Gaston Day, who comes in off a win.
Even though Gaston Day has not done well against Northside Christian Academy recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Gaston Day managed a 58-53 victory over Northside Christian Academy. The win was all the more spectacular given Gaston Day's disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 111th, while Northside Christian Academy is ranked 19th).
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Gaston Day to victory, but perhaps none more so than Griffen Simpson, who scored 17 points. Simpson continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Braylen Todd was another key contributor, scoring 12 points.
Meanwhile, Hickory Grove Christian's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their ninth straight loss. Their tough 68-43 defeat to Gaston Christian might stick with them for a while. Hickory Grove Christian has not had much luck with Gaston Christian recently, as the team's come up short the last eight times they've met.
Gaston Day is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 13-8 record this season. As for Hickory Grove Christian, they bumped their record down to 4-15 with that loss, which was their fifth straight on the road.
Everything came up roses for Gaston Day against Hickory Grove Christian in their previous meeting back in December of 2023 as the team secured a 89-55 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Gaston Day since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
