III Section II recap Oct. 9, 2012
Liberty extended the longest winning streak in III Section II this week by beating Greenway, 38-33. The victory was the seventh in a row for the Lions.
Copper Canyon and La Joya Community played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Copper Canyon eventually emerging with a 28-23 victory. Michael Bell threw for 162 yards and one touchdown and ran for 45 yards in the win.
The Demons' dynamic duo of Kenneth Heinzerling and Cody Wescott proved tough for Liberty to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Heinzerling threw for 292 yards and two touchdowns and Wescott had 107 yards receiving. Joey McDonald helped Greenway's passing attack out by catching seven balls for 97 yards.
Ira Rojas was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 11 carries, he ran for 143 yards as Peoria lost to Dan Filleman's team. Teammate Josh Castro added to the ground attack by rushing for 121 yards.
Keenan White provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Mohave fell to Parker. He completed 16 passes for 226 yards and one touchdown and also ran for 84 yards. White's favorite target this week was Kevin Holt, who caught six passes for 78 yards.
Mike Wood made the biggest impact on defense this week as Coconino bested Tuba City. The 5-foot-10 junior recorded one fumble and grabbed 0.5 sack.
6-foot-3 quarterback Tyler Rogers of the Lions is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1410. He has also thrown 22 touchdowns. On the ground, K.J. Anthony's team's Mark Dogbah has rushed for 1337 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Elroy Masters. The Sunrise Mountain star has 24 catches for 780 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Shadow Ridge takes on Dysart. The Stallions are currently in sixth, while the Demons are in 10th.
Flagstaff took down Chino Valley 60-6 last week, the largest margin of any game.
