The Tulia Hornets will challenge the Friona Chieftans at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Tulia has four straight victories, Friona has four straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
On Saturday, Tulia made easy work of Non Varsity Opponent and carried off a 7-1 win. The Hornets might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four games by six runs or more this season.
Jarvis Pestrana made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over four innings pitched. What's more, he gave up only zero walks, the fewest he's had since back in April of 2024. He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 1-for-2. What's more, he posted three RBI, the most he's had since back in March of 2024.
In other batting news, Tulia let Xavier Ortiz and Jacob Trevino run wild. Ortiz scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-1, while Trevino scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in both of his plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Friona came up short against Seminole on Friday, falling 14-1. The contest marked the Chieftans' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.
Friona saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Abram Rocha, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2. Aiden Tafoya also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.
Friona's defeat dropped their record down to 1-7. As for Tulia, their victory bumped their record up to 7-2.
Friona's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Tulia has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .463. It's a different story for Friona, though, as they've only averaged .336. Will they be able to contain Tulia's hitters?
Tulia took their win against Friona in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 20-9. Does Tulia have another victory up their sleeve, or will Friona turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
