The Green River Pirates had already won six in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 19.5 points), and they went ahead and made it seven on Saturday. They claimed a resounding 74-41 victory over Monument Valley at home. Green River has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won six contests by 20 points or more this season.
Green River had a senior duo take command as Raul Mendoza scored 26 points and Luis Hernandez scored 21 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Mendoza has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Jason Hernandez, who scored eight points.
Defeat or not, Monument Valley got some senior leadership from Melias Cly and Braxton Goodshield. Cly scored 16 points, while Goodshield. scored 13 points.
Green River is on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 12 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 14-5 record this season. As for Monument Valley, they dropped their record down to 5-15 with that defeat, which was their 12th straight on the road dating back to last season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Green River will take on Milford at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are closely ranked in Utah (Green River is ranked 103rd, while Milford is ranked 106th). As for Monument Valley, they and Whitehorse will face off at 5:30 p.m. on February 6th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Monument Valley is facing Whitehorse at the right time seeing as Whitehorse is stuck on a three-game losing streak.
