The Picayune Maroon Tide will head out on the road to take on the George County Rebels at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Picayune is coming into the game hot, having won their last four games.
Picayune will roll into the matchup after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up one run on Thursday, then bounced right back against West Harrison on Friday. Picayune walked away with a 10-7 win over West Harrison.
Justin Stockstill was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4. Brunson Stockstill also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Justin wasn't the only one working in the hit department: Picayune kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in February.
Meanwhile, it may have taken nine innings to finish the job, but George County ultimately got the result they hoped for on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-4 victory over Long Beach. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Rebels have posted against the Bearcats since February 17, 2023.
Canyon Reeves was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in 12 consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in February.
In other pitching news, Bryce O'Neal looked comfortable as he tossed 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. He also tossed a walk, which is notable because George County is undefeated when he allows at most two walks, but 7-8 otherwise.
Reeves wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Tripp Lightsey, who scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in three of his six plate appearances. Another was Cayler Havard, who got on base in three of his six plate appearances with one RBI.
George County has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-8 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.3 runs over those games. Picayune's record is now 17-2.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Picayune has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like George County struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Picayune might still be hurting after the 10-0 defeat they got from George County in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can Picayune avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
