The Pompano Beach Golden Tornadoes's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their fourth straight loss. They took a serious blow against Northeast, falling 76-46. While losing is never fun, Pompano Beach can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 608th, while Northeast is ranked 66th).
Despite the loss, Pompano Beach still got an impressive performance from Jonathan Berwig, who scored 16 points along with six steals. Berwig scored a full 34.8% of Pompano Beach's points, the fourth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Devin Watson, who scored ten points along with seven rebounds.
Even though they lost, Pompano Beach were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Northeast was led to victory by Anthony Rodriguez and Dean Vital. Rodriguez scored 15 points along with six assists and six rebounds, while Vital scored 16 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. Vital continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last four games he's played. Landen Joseph was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with six assists.
Pompano Beach's loss was their fourth straight at home, which bumped their record down to 1-6. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 52.0 points per game. As for Northeast, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-1.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Pompano Beach will challenge Miramar at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Miramar knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past four matches -- so hopefully Pompano Beach likes a good challenge. As for Northeast, they will head out on the road to face off against Hallandale at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
