Calallen is a perfect 3-0 against Hidalgo Early College since November of 2022 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Wildcats will be playing in front of their home fans against the Pirates at 7:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Calallen has three straight victories, Hidalgo Early College has nine straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Calallen had to skate by with only a three-point margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 24-point drubbing they dealt Zapata on Friday. The Wildcats put the hurt on the Hawks with a sharp 27-3 win. The result was nothing new for the Wildcats, who have now won three contests by 24 points or more so far this season.
Calallen's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Connor Klostermann led the charge by rushing for 28 yards and two touchdowns, while also throwing for 70 yards and one TD on only six passes. Jimmy Tipton was another key rusher, rushing for 118 yards on only 15 carries.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Calallen was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 261 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 153 rushing yards in 16 consecutive matchups dating back to last season.
Meanwhile, Hidalgo Early College took a blow against Zapata last Friday, falling 48-21.
Even if they lost, Hidalgo Early College's defensive line still kept up the pressure with four sacks. That dominant display was truly a team effort as four different players picked up one apiece. Caleb Cisneros was another major factor on D, picking up a sack and making eight total tackles (2.0 for loss).
Calallen's victory bumped their record up to 7-2. As for Hidalgo Early College, their loss dropped their record down to 0-8.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Calallen has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 237.7 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Hidalgo Early College struggles in that department as they've been averaging 169.6 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Everything came up roses for Calallen against Hidalgo Early College in their previous matchup back in November of 2024, as the team secured a 57-0 win. Will the Wildcats repeat their success, or do the Pirates have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
