Basalt is 2-8 against Aspen since December of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Basalt Longhorns will head out on the road to square off against the Aspen Skiers at 7:00 p.m. Basalt is no doubt hoping to put an end to a three-game streak of away losses.
Last Saturday, Basalt came up short against Coal Ridge and fell 53-46.
Basalt's loss came about despite a quality game from Luke Williams, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and ten rebounds. It was the first time this season that Williams scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Wyatt Loomis, who scored six points along with five assists.
Meanwhile, Aspen strolled past Rifle with points to spare on Saturday, taking the game 57-41. Given Aspen's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 54th, while Rifle is ranked 249th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Tommy Franceschi continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 25 points. Kristo Klavins was another key contributor, scoring 12 points.
Basalt has traveled a rocky road recently having lost five of their last six contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-12 record this season. As for Aspen, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 17-4.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Basalt have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 24.8 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Aspen struggles in that department as they've been averaging 26 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Basalt was dealt a bruising 51-23 defeat at the hands of Aspen when the teams last played back in January. Can Basalt avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
