South Anchorage is 9-1 against Chugiak since May of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Wolverines will square off against the Mustangs at 11:00 a.m. South Anchorage's pitching crew has only allowed 3.1 runs per game this season, so Chugiak's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
South Anchorage is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Alaska's top teams: Dimond, who was ranked seventh at the time (South Anchorage was ranked second). The Wolverines walked away with a 7-4 victory over the Lynx on Thursday.
Carson Lake tossed a big game, tossing 5.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits.
At the plate, Chase Mascelli was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Logan HuLquist was another key player, earning one RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
South Anchorage hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least four batters in five consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, Chugiak never let their opponents score on Thursday. They were the clear victors by a 16-0 margin over Bettye Davis East Anchorage. With that win, the Mustangs brought their scoring average up to 6.5 runs per game.
Owen Dockstader made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits (and not a single walk). Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Chugiak got a massive performance out of Blake Yawit, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Yawit has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. Tyler Cage also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
South Anchorage's record now sits at 14-1. As for Chugiak, their record is now 4-7.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. South Anchorage has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.7 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Chugiak struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.1 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
South Anchorage came out on top in a nail-biter against Chugiak when the teams last played on Saturday, sneaking past 2-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Wolverines since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
