The Lamar Texans will head out to take on the Cesar E. Chavez Lobos at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Lamar is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.
Lamar's pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Thursday. Everything went their way against Westside as they made off with a 19-0 victory. The Texans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five contests by ten runs or more this season.
Hailey Hernandez was incredible, scoring four runs and stealing two bases while going 3-for-4. What's more, she posted two RBI, the most she's had since back in February. Clarissa Perez was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.
Hernandez wasn't the only one making solid contact: Lamar kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's a new trend for the Texans: they were averaging 5 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matchups they've averaged 9.2.
Meanwhile, Cesar E. Chavez was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost an 8-7 heartbreaker at the hands of Heights.
Daniela Rivera stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: she went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. That home run was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Ahmani Hawkins, who scored two runs while going 3-for-4.
The win made it two in a row for Lamar and bumps their season record up to 5-8. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 0 runs in those games. As for Cesar E. Chavez, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-6.
Friday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Lamar has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .460. However, it's not like Cesar E. Chavez struggles in that department as they've averaged .452. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Lamar couldn't quite get it done against Cesar E. Chavez when the teams last played back in March as they fell 6-3. Can the Texans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
