2A District 3 recap Oct. 9, 2012
Wendell Hayes of Lordsburg ran for the longest rushing play in 2A District 3 this season against Tornillo last week. Hayes ran for 65 yards on the play and finished with 259 on the day as his team bested the Coyotes.
Mesilla Valley Christian was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from third to first in the league. The Sonblazers defeated Hot Springs 33-32 earlier in the week.
Mesilla Valley Christian's dynamic duo of Tristan Franzoy and Christian Jimenez proved tough for the Tigers to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Franzoy threw for 165 yards and three touchdowns and Jimenez had 108 yards receiving. Adam Rivera helped Mesilla Valley Christian's passing attack out by catching six balls for 35 yards.
6-foot-1 quarterback Chase Carson of Hatch Valley is the league leader in passing yards this season with 603. He has also thrown seven touchdowns. On the ground, Lordsburg's Hayes has rushed for 723 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Jimenez. The Mesilla Valley Christian star has 19 catches for 500 yards.
A big matchup in 2A District 3 this week will be when the Bears take on Tularosa. Hatch Valley is currently in second, while the Wildcats are in third.
Mike Draper's team and Hot Springs played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Mike Draper's team eventually emerging with a 33-32 victory. Franzoy ran for 16 yards in the win.
