Cottonwood and Stansbury are an even 4-4 against one another since April of 2021, but likely not for long. Cottonwood will be playing at home against Stansbury at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Cottonwood is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.1 runs per game this season.
Cottonwood is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 11 runs on Wednesday, they were much more limited against Tooele on Friday. They took a 5-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Buffaloes. The contest marked the Colts' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.
Cottonwood saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ladainian Gutierrez, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. That home run was Gutierrez's first of the season.
Meanwhile, Stansbury entered their tilt with Hillcrest on Friday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They were the clear victors by a 15-5 margin over the Huskies. Considering the Stallions have won five games by more than six runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Landon Palmer made a splash while hitting and pitching. He pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted four strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March of 2024. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Xaviah Patch and Beckham Rowley did most of the damage at the plate: Patch scored two runs while going 2-for-4, while Rowley scored three runs while going 2-for-2. Those three runs gave Rowley a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jaxon Adams, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI.
Stansbury was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .519. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .423 or higher in three consecutive matches.
Having lost for the first time this season, Cottonwood fell to 7-1. As for Stansbury, their win bumped their record up to 8-4.
Monday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Cottonwood hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .368. However, it's not like Stansbury struggles in that department as they've averaged .385. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Cottonwood skirted past Stansbury 9-8 in their previous matchup back in March of 2024. Will Cottonwood repeat their success, or does Stansbury has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
