On Tuesday, the Mesquite Wildcats faced the St. Mary's Knights in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Mesquite fell just short of St. Mary's by a score of 75-73. It was the first time this season that Mesquite let down their fans at home.
Despite the loss, Mesquite saw an underclassman step up: Desean Middlebrook scored 28 points along with nine rebounds. Middlebrook has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last ten times he's played. Jaylen Wollangk was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with five assists and five rebounds.
Mesquite's loss ended a six-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 17-5. As for St. Mary's, the victory (which was their ninth in a row) raised their record to 16-6.
Mesquite will head out on the road to square off against Seton Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Seton Catholic will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Arizona Rankings (they are ranked 62nd, while Mesquite is ranked 19th). St. Mary's won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Marcos de Niza at 7:00 p.m. on January 24th. Marcos de Niza is coming into the contest on a six-game losing streak.
