The Pinecrest Patriots struggled with threes on Monday (the South Mecklenburg Sabres had five more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Pinecrest took a 58-40 bruising from South Mecklenburg. While losing is never fun, Pinecrest can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 361st, while South Mecklenburg is ranked 125th).
Despite the loss, Pinecrest still got an impressive performance from Zanodiya Mcnair, who scored 19 points along with five rebounds and five steals. Mcnair also posted two blocks for the first time this season. Aniya Mcgregor was another key contributor, scoring nine points.
It was another big night for Makailah Davis, who scored 30 points along with four steals for South Mecklenburg. That makes it three consecutive games in which Davis has scored at least a third of South Mecklenburg's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Lilly Heaslet, who scored two points along with nine rebounds and two steals.
Pinecrest has fallen quite a ways from their 15-7 record last season and are now at 4-9. As for South Mecklenburg, their victory bumped their record up to 9-6.
Pinecrest won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Scotland at 6:00 p.m. on January 16th. Scotland is coming into the game hot, having won their last six games. As for South Mecklenburg, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Myers Park at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Myers Park focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 17 on Tuesday.
