Finally, some normalcy for the high school football playoffs in Northern California.
Postponements due to smoky air from the devastating Camp Fire that scorched some 153,000 acres in Butte County and leveled the town of Paradise prompted scheduling changes.
Some of the top showdowns this week include the North Coast Section Open Division finals between top-ranked De La Salle and No. 3 Liberty, and No. 2 Folsom taking on No. 7 Monterey Trail in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I finals.

Update: The top-ranked team by the Bay Area News Group and the San Francisco Chronicle, the Spartans beat Pittsburg 38-0 in the NCS Open Division semifinals. De La Salle now seeks its 27th consecutive NCS crown and 31st since 1981. A win over Liberty will land the Spartans in a CIF State title game for a record 13th consecutive season. The NorCal unbeaten streak is 299, dating back to 1991. The Spartans are a remarkable 382-5-2 against NorCal teams since 1984 and 452-25-3 overall since 1982. Earlier wins this season include 27-21 over Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas, 14-0 over Sac-Joaquin Section No. 1 Folsom and 33-15 over Central Coast Section No. 1 Saint Francis.

Update: The top-ranked team by The Sacramento Bee for all but one week since the start of the 2012 season, the Bulldogs are back in a SJS final for the ninth consecutive season, seeking their seventh crown this decade. The loss this season was 14-0 to De La Salle in a season opener, no thanks to five turnovers. Folsom is 124-10 this decade with three CIF State title teams (and two 14-1 teams that lost to De La Salle in the 2012 and 2013 NorCal Open finals, since dropped).

Update: The Lions beat Clayton Valley Charter 42-14 in a NCS Open Division semifinal and get a shot at top-seeded De La Salle. Liberty won its first NCS championship last season, a great feat for a school that opened in 1902.

Update: The top-ranked team by The Modesto Bee, Black Hat Football and Front Row Sports, the Raiders will meet Del Oro for the SJS Division II title. Central Catholic has won a section-record 19 titles in a record 21 appearances. The loss this season was to De La Salle 35-7 after trailing by just 14 in the third quarter. Coach Canepa won CIF state titles here in 2012, 2013 and 2015.

Update: The Hillmen slugged out a 7-6 mud win over River Valley in an SJS Division III semifinal to reach a final for the third successive season and 10th time in program history. Seventeen starters are back from a CIF state finalist. This was a state-wide power in the 1970s.

Update: The Cardinals as the top seed in the NCS Division III playoffs raced past Encinal 56-21 after leading 35-0 at the half. The loss was to No. 3 Liberty, 31-14. This has been a power since the 1970s. Cardinal Newman has won 11 or more games nine times since 2006.
