La Veta hasn't had much luck against Branson/Kim recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Redhawks will host the Bearcats at 7:00 p.m. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.
La Veta took a loss when they played away from home last Saturday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They claimed a resounding 38-7 win over Cotopaxi. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for the Redhawks' offense, which had struggled in the games prior.
La Veta found their leader in freshman Weston Huff, who rushed for 70 yards and one touchdown on only six carries, and also caught a pair of TDs. Huff also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, making 12 total tackles and defending one pass in addition to snagging an interception.
La Veta was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 229 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in October of 2024.
La Veta didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Kendall Ingram and Huff. La Veta received some extra help from Huff, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Branson/Kim). They took their game last Friday with ease, bagging a 53-22 victory over Deer Trail. The win continues a trend for the Bearcats in their matchups with the Eagles: they've now won four in a row.
La Veta better keep an eye on Cooper Winter. He was instrumental in Branson/Kim's win, throwing for 115 yards and four touchdowns on only ten passes. Another player making a difference was Will Doherty, who rushed for 92 yards and one score on only ten carries.
On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Branson/Kim's defense and their four sacks. Collin Doherty was especially locked on to Deer Trail's QB and sacked him twice. Doherty is also on a roll when it comes to total tackles, as he's now made five or more in each of the last three games he's played. Will got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
La Veta's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-3. As for Branson/Kim, their win bumped their record up to 3-1.
La Veta took a serious blow against Branson/Kim in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, falling 55-0. Thankfully for the Redhawks, Kolter Cranson (who rushed for 141 yards and three TDs on only seven carries, and also picked up 82 receiving yards and a pair of scores) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
