The Quitman Wolverines will head out on the road to square off against the Haughton Buccaneers at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The last five games Quitman has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
Having struggled with four losses in a row, Quitman turned things around against Tioga on Monday. They skirted past the Indians 4-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Wolverines have posted since March 14th.
Maggie Guyotte spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on five hits.
On the hitting side, Quitman's victory was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Brenna Lamkin, who went 1-for-2 with one RBI. Avery Watson also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Haughton, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. They never let Northwood get on the board and left with a 10-0 win on Monday. Considering the Buccaneers have won 13 matches by more than five runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Dixie Williams and Charlee Prothro made a splash no matter where they played. Throwing, Williams pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Prothro tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. At bat, Williams went a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI and two doubles, while Prothro scored two runs while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances. Those two doubles gave Williams a new career-high.
In other batting news, Haughton let Kylie Small and Clara Shaffer run wild. Small went 2-for-4 with two runs and one triple, while Shaffer scored two runs while going 3-for-4. That's the most hits Shaffer has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Saylor White, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.
Haughton always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .567. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Northwood only posted an OBP of .222.
Haughton pushed their record up to 17-15 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.8 runs over those games. As for Quitman, their record is now 18-9.
Everything went Quitman's way against Haughton in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, as Quitman made off with a 15-4 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Wolverines since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
