The Keystone Wildcats completed arguably the greatest season in school history with a 7-2 win over Greenville in the Ohio Division II state championship game. Besides finishing 32-0 with 20 shutouts and a state-record 45 home runs, the Wildcats added another honor by picking up a No. 1 national ranking by MaxPreps.
Keystone moved into the top spot in the Xcellent 25 National Softball Rankings after Amador Valley (Pleasanton, Calif.) lost to Logan (Union City, Calif.) 1-0 in the North Coast Section Division I championship game. The loss dropped the Dons out of the No. 1 ranking and allowed Keystone to move in.
The Wildcats edged out two other teams with similar outstanding pedigrees. Norco (Calif.) won the Southern Section Division I championship, one of the hardest tournaments in the country, and finished the season at 31-2. Meanwhile, Porter Ridge (Indian Trail, N.C.) completed a 32-0 season and completed a gauntlet run to a North Carolina 4A state title with wins over ranked teams Alexander Central, North Davidson and Holly Springs.
Keystone gets the nod here, though, due to its tradition, its strong starting lineup and its ability to fend off one of the nation's top teams. Keystone won its third state championship and in doing so avenged its only defeat from last year. The Wildcats defeated Poland Seminary, and ace pitcher Erin Gabriel, 4-0 in the semifinals despite getting only two hits.
Keystone also has two of the top players in the state in shortstop Erin Pond and pitcher Kenzie Conrad. Both are committed to Akron next season and both are returning all-state players.
While the Xcellent 25 will continue to publish until the official end of the high school sports season in mid-June, Keystone can be crowned as the official "mythical" national champion since every team in the current Xcellent 25 has completed its season.
